The Importance of Quality Food

Written By Crystal Nelson

Quality of food is always going to be more important than quantity of food.  Let me repeat that.  QUALITY of food is always going to be MORE IMPORTANT than QUANTITY of food.  For the last two years I have studied, tried out different diets, lectured, and gone to certifications and seminars on nutrition.  When I was first introduced to CrossFit, Dr. Sear's Zone was thrown into my face.  Next came Paleo, which sparked my interest a great deal more.  The Zone didn't make sense to me.  I understood the balance he was talking about, but I never could get past the fact that unfavorable foods were still "allowed" in measured amounts.  I dove into Paleo with reading Dr. Loren Cordain's "The Paleo Diet" and Robb Wolf's website, along with some other great books like "Good Calories, Bad Calories," "In Defense of Food", and "The Omnivore's Dilemma".  I wanted to change my way of life and my diet.

Changing my diet has taken time.  I had many baby steps over the last 2 years of attempting this.  First thing I started to clean up in my diet was changing my breakfast by eating eggs instead of cereal.  I loved my cereal, but now I don't miss it at all.  Next step was eating meat instead of pasta for dinner.  Then, I started to try new vegetables and slowly started to eliminate sugar from my diet (even  my coffee!)  My results were very evident in how I felt, how I looked, and how I performed.  Everything got better just by switching to Paleo.  I stopped having acne breakouts, my stomach started to feel optimal throughout the day versus my bloating I had lived with for years, and my CrossFit performance increased!  I felt good and was so amazed by this way of eating that I wanted to know more and I wanted to spread the word.
Earlier this year I had the opportunity to attend the Nutrition Certification by Robb Wolf and became even more of a Paleo fan.  Today I read his recent blog and wanted to share it with you in case you missed it.  The blog is a follow-up regarding Type 1 Diabetes reversal by simply eliminating grains and dairy.  Yes, that's right!  Amazing.  This gives me chills.  It's hard to convey to people just how important food is.  I feel like examples like this one hit home.  Even if you don't have this particular disease, it shows you how diet plays a HUGE role in your overall health.

I was watching the Food Network yesterday hoping for a new recipe to try.  Did you know there was not one recipe that was even remotely close to Paleo?!?  This is why we are sick.  Everything had breading, sugar, oils, beans, you name it, it had it.  When you are out do you notice how many people there are that look sick?  Whether that be overweight, skin and hair condition, what they're eating at the moment, or how physically fit they look.  We need to start spreading the word to America that our food is killing us. It's amazing how in the dark everyone is and I want to be a part of shedding light on our current food industry.  Does your body want to be sick and not feel good?
